Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about UK customs clearance — answered straight

Do I really need a customs agent?
Legally, no — you can declare your own imports and exports if you register with HMRC and have CDS access. In practice, almost no one does. A misclassified commodity code, a missed special procedure or an incorrect customs value can cost more in duty and time than several years of broker fees. Most importers use an agent for the same reason most people use an accountant.
What is CDS and how is it different from CHIEF?
The Customs Declaration Service (CDS) is HMRC's current platform for customs declarations. It replaced the older CHIEF system — for imports in 2022 and for exports in November 2024. CDS uses a different data structure, different commodity-code logic and different declaration types, which is why broker quality varies more on CDS than it did on CHIEF.
How long does customs clearance take?
For a pre-lodged road declaration where the documents arrive in good time, the entry is normally cleared within hours of the goods arriving at port. Air freight typically clears within a few hours of landing. The slowest leg is usually waiting for documents from the supplier — once we have everything, we file fast.
Do I need an EORI number?
Yes, if you import or export goods to or from the UK as a business or as a sole trader. You also need a separate XI EORI for movements involving Northern Ireland. We can apply for both — turnaround is typically three to five working days.
Which documents do you need?
For a standard import: commercial invoice, packing list, transport document (CMR, AWB or bill of lading), and the importer's EORI. Some commodities need additional documents — health certificates for foodstuffs, CE marking or UKCA evidence, IPAFFs pre-notification for live animals or animal products, import licences for controlled goods. We will tell you exactly what is needed for your specific shipment.
What is GVMS and when does it apply?
Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS) is the HMRC system that links customs declarations to lorry movements at certain UK ports — including Dover, Eurotunnel, Holyhead and most RoRo ports. Hauliers need a Goods Movement Reference (GMR) before arriving at the port. We generate the GMR as part of the declaration.
Do you handle goods from Türkiye?
Yes. Türkiye is one of the UK's larger trade partners and a regular focus for our team. We provide full bilingual service in English and Turkish, understand the documentation patterns common to Turkish exporters, and have experience with the EUR.1 movement certificates and ATR documents specific to the Türkiye–UK route.
How are your fees calculated?
We quote a fixed fee per declaration based on the type of entry, the number of commodity codes involved, and whether any special procedures apply. No percentage-of-value charges, no hidden add-ons. You will see the price before we file.
Can you handle ATA Carnets?
Yes. We prepare ATA Carnets for trade shows, professional equipment, samples and goods sent for repair. The carnet is issued via the London Chamber of Commerce, and we arrange the security bond as part of the service.
What if HMRC asks a question after the entry is filed?
We respond to HMRC on your behalf as part of the service. If documentation is missing or a query needs your input, we tell you immediately and walk through it with you. The declaration is not finished when the MRN issues — it is finished when the goods are cleared and any post-clearance audit is closed.
